Information on Firearm Possession

Felons

  • Federal Law forbids persons with felony convictions to buy, own, use or possess firearms, ammunition or explosives. Violation of these laws is a violation of probation, parole and/or supervised release and could result in imprisonment and a new offense being filed against the person.
  • Even after supervision expires, you will not be permitted to buy, own, use or possess any firearm without specific written authorization from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. To do so without that authorization constitutes a new felony, subject to additional Federal or state charges.

Misdemeanors

  • It is the policy of the Northern District of Ohio that during supervision, even those individuals convicted of misdemeanors cannot buy, own, use or possess firearms. After supervision, you may, so long as you do not have any previous felony convictions and subject to any applicable state law.
